Pathology
The Department of Pathology has a broad mission within the University of Arizona. Our faculty provide for the education of medical students, residents, graduate students, and post-graduate physicians. The department provides both preclinical and clinical programs in experimental pathology as well as clinical pathology and supports the educational and clinical activities of numerous other departments. At the post-graduate level, the department provides residency training for both academic and community-hospital based pathologists. This program leads to certification in both anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
The Department of Pathology has state of the art core laboratories for biomedical imaging, laser capture microscopy, and microarrray analysis. Members of the department have been pioneers in the development of several key pathology technologies, including automated immunohistochemistry and in cytohybridization. The department has been a leader in Telepathology research and houses the statewide Arizona Telemedicine Program.
Research, both basic and clinical, is a major activity in the Department of Pathology. Research activities range from experimental and molecular pathology to biomedical technology transfer to clinical studies. The department collaborates closely with the Arizona Cancer Center and the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center on many research initiatives. Nearly all residents engage in some research, either basic or clinical, and virtually all residents will have one or several publications by the completion of their residency.
The faculty provides professional expertise in the areas of surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, transplantation pathology, cytology, cytogenetics, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, blood banking, immunopathology, toxicology, dermatopathology, and neuropathology. In addition, our staff is responsible for the professional management of the University Medical Center's clinical laboratory services.
Clinicopathology conferences are broadcast to the VA Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center and Kino Hospital. Telepathology services provide educational and consultation services to rural areas within Arizona as well as Sonora, Mexico, which do not have ready access to specialty pathology and laboratory medicine services.
