Orthopaedic Surgery
The goal of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is to establish a source of excellence in patient care, teaching and research. Our department has recruited outstanding physicians in many specialty areas including Hand, Spine, Sports, General Orthopaedics and Trauma. We provide continuity of care for patients and also continuity in the educational process for our residents and fellows.
Our clinic is the only full-service orthopaedic practice in Southern Arizona and provides Level 1 trauma services for University Medical Center. We provide a complete range of orthopedic and sports medicine services for adult and pediatric patients. We offer special expertise in joint replacement, joint reconstruction, arthroscopy, spine surgery, and orthopedic oncology. In addition, we provide treatment for complex children’s problems, including congenital abnormalities, sarcomas and hip dislocations.
Our department also provides care for the UA Athletic Department and for many of the faculty and staff requiring orthopaedic services. In addition, we provide care for Pima Community College’s Athletic Department as well as many local high school athletic programs.
Our educational program is outstanding and has comprehensive coverage of all the orthopaedic subspecialty areas with an integrated didactic lecture series and weekly formal case presentations. Basic science lectures are presented that cover all the clinical and research areas in orthopaedics for all residents.
Our Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, which is headed by John A. Szivek, PhD, is heavily weighted towards implant design and use. We are exploring tissue engineering with the development of a sensate scaffold on which bone and cartilage cells can be grown. These areas offer exciting opportunities for the future and should put us in the forefront in orthopaedic research in the United States.
